The built-in controls
- Function keys with a sun icon, handled by the OEM keyboard driver.
- The brightness slider in Quick Settings on Windows 11 or the Action Center on Windows 10.
- Settings > System > Display for the same value with extra options.
- Battery saver, which lowers brightness automatically when unplugged.
Going below the minimum
When zero percent still feels bright at night, a software dimmer darkens the image further. It does not touch the backlight, so it works on any laptop panel. See display dimmer for how overlay and gamma dimming differ.
Stopping brightness from changing by itself
- Turn off adaptive or automatic brightness in Settings > System > Display > Brightness.
- Disable content adaptive brightness control (CABC) if your device offers it.
- Check the OEM control panel, which may have its own power or eye-care profile.
- Review Battery saver so it does not dim the panel when you unplug.

Why does my laptop screen dim automatically?
Adaptive brightness, content adaptive brightness control or Battery saver are the usual causes. All three can be disabled in Windows settings.
Does dimming a laptop screen extend battery life?
Yes. Backlight dimming is one of the most effective single changes you can make for runtime. Software overlay dimming does not save power, since the backlight stays where it is.
Can I use the same app for my laptop panel and my monitor?
Yes. Utilities that enumerate displays show the internal panel alongside external monitors, with a separate slider for each.
