Backlight dimming
The cleanest method. On a laptop, Windows lowers the panel backlight directly. On an external monitor, a utility sends a brightness command over DDC/CI and the monitor dims itself. Contrast is preserved and power draw drops.
Software dimming with an overlay or gamma change
When the panel is already at its minimum and still too bright, software can help. An overlay draws a semi-transparent dark layer over the desktop; a gamma adjustment reduces the output values the GPU sends. Both work on any display, including monitors with no DDC/CI support.
The trade-off is a slight loss of shadow detail, which is rarely a problem for reading or browsing at night.

Is dimming the same as Night light or dark mode?
No. Night light changes colour temperature and dark mode changes interface colours. A dimmer reduces overall light output, which is what actually eases eye strain in a dark room.
Can I dim only one monitor?
Yes, backlight control is per display. Software overlays may also target a single screen, depending on the tool.
Does dimming affect games or video playback?
Backlight dimming does not interfere at all. Overlay-based dimming can be bypassed by full-screen exclusive applications on some systems.
