Brightness Control for Windows 11

Windows 11 moved brightness into Quick Settings, the panel that opens when you click the battery, network or volume icons. On a laptop the slider is right there. On a desktop it is usually missing entirely.

Where the Windows 11 brightness slider lives

Full step-by-step instructions with troubleshooting are on our guide to adjusting brightness on Windows 11.

  1. Press Windows + A to open Quick Settings.
  2. Drag the brightness slider at the top of the panel.
  3. For more options open Settings > System > Display and expand Brightness.

Why the slider disappears on a desktop PC

Quick Settings only shows brightness for a panel Windows drives itself. A monitor connected over HDMI or DisplayPort keeps its own brightness setting in firmware, so Windows 11 hides the control instead of showing one that would not work.

A utility fills that gap by sending brightness commands to the monitor over DDC/CI, which most modern displays support.

Windows 11 features worth knowing

  • Content adaptive brightness control (CABC) can change brightness by itself on some laptops. Turn it off in Settings > System > Display > Brightness if levels drift.
  • Night light reduces blue light but does not dim the backlight; combine it with a real brightness change.
  • HDR mode changes how the brightness slider behaves, since SDR content brightness is handled separately.

Adding a per-display slider on Windows 11

Both featured applications run on Windows 11 and list each connected display separately. The Microsoft Store version installs through the Store; Twinkle Tray on Windows 11 integrates with the tray and supports keyboard shortcuts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the brightness slider greyed out on Windows 11?

A greyed-out slider usually points at the display driver. Update the graphics driver, and on laptops make sure the generic PnP monitor entry has not replaced the OEM display driver in Device Manager.

Can I control external monitor brightness on Windows 11 without extra software?

Not from Quick Settings. Windows 11 has no built-in interface for external monitor brightness, so you use the monitor's own buttons or a utility that supports DDC/CI.

Does Windows 11 brightness reset after sleep?

It can, especially where adaptive brightness or a monitor's own power settings are involved. Disabling adaptive features and setting levels from one utility keeps things predictable.
