How to Use a Brightness Slider on Windows

A slider is the most direct brightness control there is. Windows provides one for internal panels; a small utility extends the idea to every screen on your desk.

The built-in slider

On Windows 11 press Windows + A and drag the slider in Quick Settings. On Windows 10 press Windows + A and use the Action Center slider. Both affect the internal display only.

Adding a tray slider for all displays

  1. Install one brightness utility from the download page.
  2. Enable start with Windows so the tray icon is always present.
  3. Pin the icon to the taskbar tray rather than the overflow menu.
  4. Open the panel and confirm each display has its own slider.

Everyday workflow

  • Morning: raise brightness on the screen facing the window.
  • Afternoon: level everything to match ambient light.
  • Evening: lower all displays and enable Night light.
  • Late night: add a software dimmer if the minimum is still too bright.

Shortcuts instead of clicking

On a desktop keyboard, hotkeys are the closest thing to laptop brightness keys. Assign two combinations and you rarely open the panel again. See the brightness slider page for how the panel is laid out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the built-in slider not affect my monitor?

The Windows slider only controls internal panels. External monitors need software that talks to the monitor directly.

Can I put a brightness slider on the taskbar?

A tray utility is the practical equivalent: one click on the icon opens the slider panel next to the clock.
